Special Features
As
a small two-section school, Central Elementary provides an intimate learning
atmosphere for its students. Please read on to learn about many of the
additional features offered at Central.
Grades 1-5
All students
will be grouped in Math and in Reading based on achievement levels.
Students will receive Science and Social Studies
instruction at least four days a week.
Students will enjoy increased hands-on learning
activities.
An emphasis on active parental involvement in the classroom will benefit students.
Classrooms for all sections of Grades 1-5 will be on one
floor.
Genders between each section of classes will be more
equally balanced.
Placement of students with special needs will be more
equally balanced between classrooms.
Interaction among students, both within and between grade
levels, will be increased.
Central Elementary is home to the Brookings School
Districts Special Needs Preschool, which helps to promote awareness and
interaction with students of varying special needs.
Centrals physical closeness to downtown Brookings
allows students to benefit from partnerships with local businesses.
Grades 1-2
Students will receive some of their instruction in a
mixed-age grouping, meaning in a class of first-graders and second-graders
combined.
Students will receive 50 minutes of daily reading
instruction in small groups of fewer than 11 students.
Students will continue to receive daily instruction in
Music and Physical Education/Wellness.
Students in Grades 1-2 will benefit from working with the
same primary teachers for two years.
First-grade students have a smooth transition from
Kindergarten, eased by Grade 2 student mentors.
Grades
3-5
Departmentalizing in Grades 3-5 will allow for
specialized instruction in Science and Social Studies, with an emphasis on
increased hands-on activities.
Grades
4-5
Students in Grades 4-5 will receive keyboarding instruction. (Both a stationary and a portable
computer lab are available for all grades.)
