Grades 3-5
Students in Grades 3-5 will be split into two sections per grade, with shared teachers for Math, Reading, Science and Social Studies. The new daily schedule calls for all students to receive Math and Reading at the same time.
Students’
scores on the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) and/or state assessment
tool will determine their reading levels. Teacher evaluations will determine
students’ math levels.
Departmentalizing,
which will occur for Science and Social Studies instruction, will allow teachers
to specialize in one of those particular subjects. As an example, one of the two
third-grade teachers will instruct both sections of third-grade Social Studies,
while the other third-grade teacher will instruct both sections of third-grade
Science. This will allow for more hands-on instruction in these subjects.
Students
in Grades 3-5 will have Art, Library and Guidance once a week; Music, twice a
week; and Physical Education/Wellness, twice a week.
In addition, students in Grade 4 may begin string
instrument lessons. In Grade 5, students may begin band instrument lessons.
Students in Grade 5 are involved in D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education).
