Grades 1 and 2

Students in Grades 1-2 receive some of their instruction in a mixed-age grouping — in other words, in a class of first-graders and second-graders combined.

First- and second-grade students are grouped and assigned teachers based on their scores from the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA), a tool used to gauge students’ progress in reading.

Second-graders are grouped based on their Spring scores. First-graders were assessed within the first two weeks of the school year. Students new to the Brookings School District will be assessed within the two first weeks of their arrival at Central.

Reading instruction takes place in small groups of fewer than 12 to ensure students receive the attention they need.

For Math, students are grouped according to their achievement levels as determined by their teachers.

First- and second-grade students receive Science and Social Studies instruction in their homerooms four times a week.

Students in Grades 1-2 have Music and Physical Education/Wellness on a daily basis. Art, Library and Guidance are offered on a weekly basis.

Students benefit from having the same core of primary teachers for two consecutive years.
