The
mission of Shaping Character in the Brookings elementary schools is to work
together through a partnership among school, home and community to provide a
safe environment where students will use the virtues of respect, responsibility,
perseverance, caring, self-discipline, citizenship, honesty, courage and
fairness to be productive community members.
Objectives:
- To educate and
partner with teachers, parents, youth organization leaders, and community
members to understand the need to teach character-building traits.
- To improve the
school climate by enriching interpersonal communication skills between
staff and students in order to build a safe environment that promotes good
character.
- To help students,
teachers and parents become more conscious, committed and competent
decision-makers in their thinking, feelings and behavior.
- To provide
educators with methods, strategies, and curricula to promote good
character via a purposeful and pervasive program.
- To help students
internalize virtues that foster intrinsic motivation and success at
meeting academic expectations.
- To provide
students with outreach service project opportunities.
- To develop a
proactive community coalition that sustains the momentum of
character-building efforts.
- To assess the
impact of character education by utilizing various assessment tools.
